Our identity is who we are and really that’s all we have! So the big question is “who are you?” Often time I get to deal with people or businesses who have a hard time defining who they are. Who you are is not just your name, attributes and your operational tactics as an entity. It goes beyond that; it is the emotion your identity motivates when someone sees you or thinks of you. The emotion is usually wrapped in your name or symbol of activity.

Think about it for a moment, what comes to your mind when you hear the word Google – Communication and search, Facebook – Community and networking, Michael Jackson – Entertainment, Performance, Jesus Christ – Salvation. The point am trying to make is that your identity would always provoke certain emotions in any person that hears your name or sees your identity mark. So it is your duty as person, brand or service provider to deliberately associate your identity with something that would provoke positive emotions in your target audience.

How do you provoke the right positive emotion that relates to you, your brand, product or the services you render? Very simple, follow the steps below:

  1. Define who you are; your philosophy, goals, vision, mission and business objectives
  2. State exactly in clear words the services you render or products you sell
  3. Emphasize how your service or product offering will add value and benefit your target audience
  4. And summarize these 3 steps in one sentence and image and this will form the basics of your identity.
