THEFLICKSON LTD is a Nigerian-owned film distribution company building a Transactional Video on Demand (TVOD) and Live Streaming platform — available on web, iOS, and Android — with a mission to create infrastructure for African filmmakers and storytellers.

The key challenge was building a platform that serves two very different users exceptionally well: viewers who want a frictionless discovery and rental experience, and filmmakers who need transparent reporting, content management, and monetisation tools. These dual requirements shaped every product decision — from architecture to UX.

The platform was designed and built to close the gap between African storytellers and global audiences, using transactional distribution as a model that protects creator rights and enables fair compensation at scale.

The Challenge

Two Distinct Users. One Platform. Zero Compromise.

Dual User Complexity

Viewers and filmmakers have fundamentally different needs that a single product must satisfy simultaneously.

Payment Friction

Streaming products that lose users at the payment step lose revenue permanently — conversion had to be seamless.

Weak Content Discovery

Without a strong discovery layer, even a large catalogue fails to convert browsers into renters.

No Creator Dashboard

Filmmakers needed a self-service tool to upload content, manage titles, and track earnings without support tickets.

Mobile-First Audience

African audiences predominantly consume content on mobile devices — the web build had to extend perfectly to apps.

Smart TV Roadmap Gap

No Nigerian TVOD platform had a credible Smart TV presence — a market gap THEFLICKSON needed to claim.

Mapping the viewer journey and the common drop-off points in streaming products

We studied the typical viewer journey: discovery → trailer → rent/pay → watch → share — and mapped the common drop-off points in streaming products. The research revealed three recurring failure modes: payment friction, weak discovery, and inconsistent device experience.

For filmmakers, the parallel problem was opacity: creators were distributing content to platforms they couldn't see into — no real-time reporting, no clear earnings visibility, and no self-service control. These insights shaped the dual-layer product strategy: a world-class viewer experience supported by a transparent, powerful creator layer.

Solution

Three layers. One connected streaming platform.

Platform architecture purpose-built for African storytellers and film distribution

THEFLICKSON demonstrates what it takes to build a modern African streaming platform: trust in the product, accessibility across devices, and a system that respects creators through transparent reporting and distribution. The platform's dual-layer architecture — built for both viewers and filmmakers — positions it as infrastructure for the African content economy.

Streaming products win when they balance three things: a frictionless viewer journey, transparent creator tools, and a device strategy that meets users everywhere — from mobile to Smart TVs.
